Commencement COVID-19 Updates

Ceremony Schedule

Following guidance from state and federal agencies to suspend large events and promote social distancing due to COVID-19, the May 2020 undergraduate, graduate, and law commencement ceremonies will be postponed until December 2020.

  • Friday, December 18, 2020 - Law and Graduate Ceremonies
  • Saturday, December 19, 2020 - Undergraduate Ceremonies

The Miller School of Medicine will host a virtual commencement on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at 3 p.m. EST (M.D. candidates only) and will communicate those details when available.

Additionally, all Senior Send-Off events for this semester, including the Commencement Ball, have been canceled.

Please note, Fall 2020 candidates will still have their own ceremonies as previously scheduled for Thursday, December 17, 2020.

Degree and Diploma

You will still earn your degree and be considered a graduate of the University of Miami upon completion of your academic requirements, regardless of whether or not you are able to attend your ceremony in December.

Diplomas are issued by the Office of the Registrar upon successful completion of your degree requirements. More information can be found via the Office of the Registrar.

Regalia, Diploma Covers, and Stole of Gratitude

The Office of Commencement is working to provide graduates, who are unable to join us in December, with an option to ship regalia and diploma covers directly. Students would only be responsible for the shipping fee.

We are also working to make Stoles of Gratitude available for purchase online for students who are unable to attend in December.

More details will be emailed to graduates as they are confirmed.

For those attending the December ceremonies, you will be able to pick up your regalia and purchase a Stole of Gratitude during the designated Cap and Gown distribution days on campus or on the day of your designated ceremony, and will receive your diploma cover as you walk across the stage. Specific details will be communicated directly with you as they become available.

Student Speakers

A student speaker will still be featured during the rescheduled ceremonies. We encourage you to apply if you meet the criteria and plan to attend. Please note there will be a virtual selection process to accommodate all students.

Details for undergraduate student speakers will be update on our website, so please check back for details in the fall.
